The MVP Track Club president and co-founder Bruce James believes Shericka Jackson has a chance to win the Women’s World Athlete of the Year.

The MVP Track Club president and co-founder Bruce James is banking on reigning World 200m champion Shericka Jackson to win the Women’s World Athlete of the Year ahead of the World Athletics Awards scheduled for December 11.

James believes that the only accolade missing out on Jackson’s 2023 season is world records but she has gotten closer to that.

He lauded Jackson’s remarkable performance that saw her win double gold (200m and 100m) at the Prefontaine Classic, the Diamond League Meeting final. She also won the World title in the 200m and finished second in the 100m behind Sha’Carri Richardson.

“The only item missing from Shericka’s exceedingly great resume of 2023 is world records and she has gotten closer than anyone else in history to the 200m world record.

So, I believe that in terms of her chances, if she had a world record, she would be named Female Athlete of the Year, but it is still up to the selection committee to make the final determination, but comparing her with the other athletes selected, the only item missing from her brilliant 2023 resumé is a world record,” James said as per the Jamaica Gleaner.

The Jamaican was unbeaten in the 200m this season and she became the fastest woman alive over the distance. She also clocked the second fastest time in history 21.41, to win the World Championships.

“Shericka’s nomination and top-five selection confirm that the MVP Track and Field Club continues to develop the very best athletes in the world, right here in Jamaica, using Jamaican facilities, with Jamaican coaches and Jamaican management.

It’s a testament to our ability as Jamaicans to be the very best in the numerous facets in athletics,” he added.

The other finalists for the 2023 Women’s World Athlete of the Year include double world record holder Faith Kipyegon, Ethiopia’s marathon world record holder Tigist Assefa, Dutch woman Femke Bol, and Venezuela’s triple jump world champion Yulimar Rojas.

If successful, Jackson would join former 100m world-record holder Asafa Powell (now retired) and five-time 100m World Champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, as MVP members who have been honoured with this prestigious award.
