Chepkoech, the 2019 World champion, missed out on last year’s World Championships due to an injury but she has confirmed that she is back and ready to reclaim her title.

With just nine days to go, three female steeplechasers are honing their skills at the Moi International Sports Center in Kasarani with the hope of reclaiming the title Kenya lost during last year’s edition of the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA.

All hopes will be resting on World record holder Beatrice Chepkoech, Commonwealth Games champion Jackline Chepkoech, and World Under-20 champion Faith Cherotich to deliver. The trio has all it takes to bring back Kenya’s glory if they put in the work.

Chepkoech, the 2019 World champion, missed out on last year’s World Championships due to an injury but she has confirmed that she is back and ready to reclaim her title.

During the World Championships National Trials, Chepkoech was in a class of her own as she cruised to the finish in 9:09.43 ahead of Jackline and Cherotich.

In a post-race interview, she said: “At the moment I can say I’m doing great…no injury setbacks at all. We shall go and work on our speed so we can reclaim the title but I can assure Kenyans that we are at a good place as steeple chasers.

In her specialty, she opened her season with a fourth-place finish at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar before carrying the day at the Kip Keino Classic.

Chepkoech then proceeded to the Diamond League Meeting in Florence, Italy where she finished fourth and later on, proceeded to win the Diamond League Meeting in Lausanne. Her final race before the World Championships was at the Diamond League Meeting in London where she finished second.

On her part, Jackline has also been in impeccable form since the season started. The 19-year-old finished seventh at the Meeting in Doha, Qatar, and then proceeded to finish third at the Kip Keino Classic.

She then went to the Diamond League Meeting in Florence, Italy where she finished second. Her final race was the Diamond League Meeting in London where she stunned the masses to win in a new meeting record of 8:57.35.

Cherotich is also one to watch when the steeplechasers head to Central Europe. Having only competed in three steeplechase races and finished in the podium bracket, Cherotich will definitely be looking to achieve something good.

The 19-year-old opened her season at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar where she finished third then proceeded to the Kip Keino Classic where she finished second. Her last race before the World Championships was at the National Trials where she finished third.

The Kenyan trio will, however, not have a smooth ride since they are bound to face opposition from Ethiopians, Kazakhstanis, and Bahrainis. Winfred Mutile Yavi of Bahrain will be making a return with the hope of making a statement and hopefully attaining a podium finish after a fruitful start to the season.

The Ethiopian duo of Werkuha Getachew and Mekides Abebe who finished second and third last year will be looking to go one step better in the event. The 2017 World champion Emma Coburn of the USA will also be in the mix with the hope of reclaiming her title.
