The 46th Chicago Marathon on October 13 will feature top long-distance runners vying for lucrative prizes, with $100,000 awarded to the winners and additional bonuses for breaking course records.

The 46th edition of the Chicago Marathon comes up on Sunday, October 13 having attracted some of the greatest long-distance runners who will be out to continue the late Kelvin Kiptum’s legacy.

The lucrative prize money is also one of the attractions that will motivate runners to fight for top finishes in the race. Neither of last year’s winners in the men’s and women’s fields, Kiptum and Sifan Hassan will return to the streets but the event will promise to be thrilling.

The women’s course record seems within reach, 2:13:44, but the men’s record, which is the current world marathon record, 2:00:35, will require a lot to be broken. However, athletes still have a chance to earn a good amount of money with the open division offering $100,000 to the winners. In case a new record is set, an additional $50,000 will also be awarded to the record breakers.

In the open division, the top five marathoners to cross the finish line are also awarded with the second, third, fourth and fifth-place finishers pocketing $75,000, $50,000, $30,000 and $25,000. In the Wheelchair division men/women, the athletes to cross the finish line first will pocket $40,000 and the top six athletes will also receive prize money.

The second-place finishers will bag $30,000 while the third, fourth, fifth and sixth-place finishers will pocket $20,000, $15,000, $10,000 and $5,000. The Wheelchair division men/women (T51/T52) will award the first three athletes ($1,500, $1,000 and $500).

In the American open division men/women, the first Americans to cross the finish line will bag $15,000 while those who finish second will be awarded $12,000. The third, fourth and fifth-place finishers will walk away with $10,000, $7,000 and $5,000. The Masters division men/women will award the top three finishers ($2,000, $1,500 and $1,000).
