Michael Johnson has explained how he overcame early career injuries, ultimately enabling him to become one of the most dominant sprinters in history.

American sprint legend Michael Johnson has narrated his struggle with injuries in his early years of his career and how he managed to bounce back and become one of the most dominant sprinters of all time.

Michael Johnson disclosed that in his collegiate years, he was always sure of an injury before the season ends. He admitted that injuries would always strike when he was competing in championships and important events.

“I had so many injuries and that was a huge problem for me throughout my four years or my first three years as a collegiate athlete so I was injured everyone of the first three years of my career. I had the times and I was running the times early in the season to win those races but I was injured at the end of the season, so I didn’t and that was a problem,” Michael Johnson said.

“I had struggled with injuries for three years but at the same time, I was showing amazing potential running some of the fastest times in the world. We all knew that the potential and the only thing holding me back was trying to keep myself healthy,” he added.

As he was looking to transition to the senior category, Michael Johnson had a sit down with his then coach, Clyde Hart. The eight-time world champion hated stretching but it is one of the things that saved him from injury setbacks.

Michael Johnson also disliked being in the weight room doing strength training but he had to commit to it.

“I learned earlier on in my career that you have to look in the mirror and figure out if there is something you can do. It was one of the most interesting situations and probably impactful,” he said.

“If you want to be a great sprinter, you need to do the running, stretching and be flexible. It’s strength training, it’s taking care of yourself. You can’t choose what you will do, it’s all of them. Thankfully, I learnt that earlier,” he added.

Michael Johnson held the world and Olympic records in the 200m and 400m, as well as the world record in the indoor 400m. He also once held the world's best time in the 300m. He is generally considered one of the greatest and most consistent sprinters in the history of track and field.
