Maureen Jepkoech expressed her ambition to represent Kenya at the 2025 World Championships after winning the Athletics Kenya Machakos Cross Country, aiming to build on her promising performance as a senior athlete.

Maureen Jepkoech has opened up about her desire to represent the country at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan after claiming victory at the Athletics Kenya Machakos Cross country.

The 20-year-old ran a tactical race to claim the win in a stacked women’s field in the race, clocking a stunning 36:22.9 to cross the finish line ahead of Christine Njoki who timed 36:32.2. Esther Chemutai sealed the podium in the race, clocking 37:13.7.

Maureen Jepkoech has represented Kenya only once, racing at the 2023 African U20 Championships in Ndola, Zambia where she finished sixth in the women’s 5000m race.

“I have competed in Europe before, in a 5000m race in an invitational meet. I am yet to represent the country as a senior in any race. I have only competed in an under-20 championship in Zambia. I hope to be well prepared so I can be able to be included in the Kenyan team to the 2025 World Championships,” Maureen Jepkoech said in an interview after the race.

Maureen Jepkoech revealed that it was the first time she was competing in Machakos but she has run a series of cross-country races in the junior category. She graduated to the senior category earlier this year and has already shown great improvement in her performance.

This season, she has been to a couple of international races after opening her season at the Sirikwa Classic Cross-Country Tour. She proceeded to finish distant 22nd at the Kenyan Cross-Country Championships.

Jepkoech then proceeded to claim top honours at the Seven Hills Record Run and 34. Würzburger Residenzlauf before finishing third at the 25. Oelder InSiTech Citylauf. She also finished third at the Track Night Vienna and proceeded to finish second at the Stadioneröffnung Dresden. Jepkoech then rounded up the podium at the Copenhagen Athletics Games before her race in Machakos.

“This was my first time racing here and I’ve always been hearing about Machakos…I always run the cross-country and I have finished second and third in previous editions of the Sirikwa Classic cross-country in the junior races. This season I graduated to the senior race and I finished 13th at the Sirikwa Classic Cross country,” she added.
