Maureen Jepkoech and Edwin Bett claimed victory in the senior races at the Athletics Kenya Cross Country meet in Kapsokwony, while Andrew Alamisi and Dorcas Jepkwemoi topped the U-20 categories.

Maureen Jepkoech and Edwin Bett have claimed top honours in the senior races at the second Athletics Kenya Cross country meet in Kapsokwony.

Competing in the women’s race, Maureen Jepkoech stuck onto Catherine Reline who did the donkey work and as they approached the finish line, the youngster outsmarted experience Reline to claim top honours in the race. Delvine Relin Meringor rounded up the podium in the race.

Maureen Jepkoech is fresh-from claiming top honours in the women’s race in the Athletics Kenya cross country opener in Machakos and will be out to continue her winning streak as she eyes a slot in the Kenyan team to the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

“The secret is working hard in training, cooperating and following instructions from the coach. I was competing as a junior athlete but I’ve now graduated to a senior and I’m hoping to represent Kenya at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo,” Maureen Jepkoech said after the race.

On her part, second-place finisher Catherine Reline expressed disappointment to have finished second since she had done most of the work in controlling the pace. Reline was supposed to compete at the Valencia Half Marathon but was forced to withdraw due to an injury setback.

“I was here with my mates and they performed well…I was to perform at the Valencia Half Marathon but could not due to an injury so I decided to come here and test my speed,” Reline said.

“I feel okay, my body is responding well and it’s not like things were last week. I was hoping to be number but I didn’t manage…I want to perform well this season.”

The men’s race saw Edwin Bett, who had graduated to the senior category recently, run a tactical race to claim top honours ahead of Simon Maiywa. Naibei Kiplimo completed the podium in the race.

“I thank God to have won this race today…The heat was too much in Machakos and it was a bit better this time. I had an injury but I’m now doing well,” Bett said.

“I want to thank God for giving me this win today because I didn’t know if I could win because since I came from the under-20 championships, I have never trained and I always just do light work in the evening,” Phanuel Kibet said after winning the men’s 2km race.

Meanwhile, World U20m 5000m champion, Andrew Alamisi reigned supreme in the men’s U-20 with Cornelius Kipkosgei taking second place while Edwin Sanutia rounding up the podium.

“My body is not doing that bad at the moment despite struggling in the last moments of the race and I had to persevere to keep going. I’m preparing for a race in Italy and I need to work on my speed endurance,” Alamisi said.

On his part, Cornelius Kipkosgei said: “The race has been okay and I thank God…it has been a bit tough but I’ve managed to keep going. I have hopes to keep going strong.”

The women’s U-20 6km saw Dorcas Chepkemoi lead from gun to tape to win the race as Alice Chemutai and Abigael Chemnagei finished second and third respectively.
