Masai Russell satisfied with fourth-place finish at the Diamond League Meeting in Silesia

Masai Russell finished fourth in a highly stacked field in the race won by 22-year-old Ackera Nugent of Jamaica.

Reigning Olympic 100m hurdles champion Masai Russell is not disappointed about her fourth-place finish at the Diamond League Meeting in Silesia.

The American went into the race under high pressure to deliver following her triumph at the Paris Olympic Games but failed to live up to expectations with her fourth-place finish. However, she expressed satisfaction with her performance, noting that she was just out to have fun.

The race was won by Jamaican youngster Ackera Nugent claimed the win in a meeting record time of 12.29 seconds ahead of Grace Stark who clocked 12.37 seconds to finish second. Reigning world champion Danielle Williams rounded up the podium in a time of 12.38 seconds.

“I think I just don’t want to put much pressure on myself and just have fun with it. I appreciate the new fans, I won’t make them unhappy and I just want to keep having fun cause that’s when fast times come,” Russell told Flo Track after the race.

On her part, Nugent was over the moon after beating the strong field in her first year as a professional athlete. The 22-year-old was in action at the Paris Olympic Games where she reached the final but could not finish the race.

She expressed surprise towards winning the race but disclosed that she knew she had all it took to finish in the podium bracket.

“This is my first year of competing as a professional and I feel grateful to just be able to compete against the great ladies. I am just getting used to running on the circuit,” Nugent said.

“Coming here to compete against all the best in the world, on one hand, I did not expect to win, on the other, I knew I just had to execute well and do everything that is under my control. I do not know what is to come for me next season, I just want to have confidence in what I am doing and let things take their turn,” she added.
