After clinching a gold medal in the 100m hurdle in her maiden Olympics campaign, Masai Russell is eying similar success in the 100m.
Now, she stands atop the sport as an Olympic gold medalist, having transitioned seamlessly into the professional arena.
In a recent training video on her YouTube channel, Russell opened up about the mindset that fueled her incredible debut on the global stage.
Reflecting on her journey, she shared the dramatic shift in mentality that marked her transition from an amateur to a professional athlete.
“You know, coming out of college, I don’t feel like there’s a specific standard you absolutely have to hit,” Russell said.
“If you’ve done really well throughout your college career, and then you do great at USA, it’s like, cool, that’s just the cherry on top. But if you don’t, it’s not the end of the world.”
For Russell, the collegiate environment provided a sense of freedom and exploration. Success was celebrated, but setbacks weren’t career-defining.
However, stepping into the professional world brought an entirely different level of accountability and expectation.
“As a professional, though, it’s different,” she explained. “That’s literally what you get paid to do, you’re paid to run fast when it counts. And that means performing at USA, the Olympics, World Championships, and Diamond League meets.”
This heightened sense of purpose became a cornerstone of her success. Russell described how a refined focus and determination gave her the edge she needed in her debut season.
“For me, this year, I think what’s different is just my mindset, my mentality,” she added.
“The work is going towards something that I know. I know what the work is going towards. I feel like last year, for me, I was just lost, and I didn’t really have purpose. I didn’t feel like I had purpose going into the indoor.”
