Mary Ngugi has shared her disappointment towards her fifth-place finish at the New York City Marathon and has promised to do better next season.

Mary Ngugi went into the New York City Marathon with the hope of a podium finish or even claiming top honours but ended up finishing fifth, a result that did not impress her.

After the race, Ngugi shared on her Facebook page that it was just a bad day in office but promised to bounce back stronger. The 34-year-old clocked 2:27:53 to finish fifth in the race that was won by compatriot Hellen Obiri.

She has since disclosed that she will go back to the drawing board and hopefully bounce back stronger, ready to fight for a place at the top.

"Fifth in New York…Of course, I dream of bigger. But I am proud and grateful that my team helped me get here and line up against some of the best marathon runners that there ever has been.

"Congratulations to my friend Hellen Obiri for the win, and my Kenyan sisters Sharon, Brigid, Viola & Edna for a great race.

"For me now it’s time to go home and spend some quality time with my family before thinking about what comes next. Thanks for all the support on here, it’s meant a lot,” she said.

She opened her season at the Boston Marathon where she faded to finish ninth before finishing fifth at the B.A.A. 10K.

The New York City Marathon was her third and final race of the season and she will take a break and hopefully come back stronger next season.
