Mary Moraa was floored by Kenyan compatriot Nelly Chepchirchir in the 1,000m at the Silesia Diamond League on Sunday despite clocking a season’s best.
Mary Moraa recorded a personal best but ended up on the losing side at the Silesia Diamond League on Sunday, with Kenyan compatriot Nelly Chepchirchir winning the 1,000m race.
Moraa, the world 800m champion and Olympics bronze medallist over the distance, was contesting a longer distance in the Polish city but had to settle for third place as her Kenyan compatriot claimed victory.
Chepchirchir clocked a world lead and meet record 2:31.24 to claim victory in the race ahead of Great Britain’s Jemma Reekie, who timed 2:32.56, as Moraa completed the podium in 2:33.43.

Mary Moraa’s cousin to face fierce 800m challenge at World U20 Championships
The World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima will feature a young Kenyan athlete competing against top emerging 800m talents.
It was a great outing for Chepchirchir who had a disappointing Olympics appearance where she exited at the semi-final in the 1,500m.
The 21-year-old took command of the race and made life difficult for her opponents, holding off a strong challenge for from Reekie and Moraa, for the win.
It is her first Diamond League win this season following a third-place finish in the 1,500m at the season-opening Doha leg in May.

The Commonwealth champion ran a good race on Thursday to claim victory in 800m in Lausanne and did not have enough in the tank for a longer distance in Poland on Sunday.
