Mary Moraa has revealed what was going through her mind as she watched Keely Hodgkinson win the women's 800m final at the Paris Olympic Games.
World 800m champion Mary Moraa has disclosed her thought process as she approached the finish line in the women’s 800m final at the Paris Olympic Games.
The Commonwealth Games champion explained that in the last 150m, she was feeling good and was sure about the win. However, track rival Keely Hodgkinson was also looking good with the Ethiopian, Tsige Duguma, also looking comfortable.
However, Moraa recounted the tough ordeal of battling for the top spot and her body was not moving as she intended. She finally settled for third place in a time of 1:57.42. Hodgkinson, the world 800m bronze medallist won the race in a time of 1:56.72 as Duguma came in second in a personal best time of 1:57.15.

“When we started running the first lap, we were okay until the last 600m. We were together and my body was good, and Keely was looking good too. The last 100m, Keely pushed herself and went and I was like, my body was not moving but I pushed myself until the finish line. When I reached 150m to go, I was wondering what was happening but everything was good,” Moraa said in a post-race interview.
The former world bronze medallist noted that she had to be content after winning the medal. Going into the race, she was aware of the tough opposition and knew that there were only three medals up for grabs.
“All I can say that is in a race, anything can happen because all of us are women and we have been training for the last three years with the main focus on the Olympic Games. When I stepped on the track, I knew everyone was strong and there were only three medals. My focus was to finish in the podium bracket and I’m happy about that,” Moraa said.
