Emmanuel Wanyonyi shares how borrowed shoes sparked his successful athletics career
Emmanuel Wanyonyi has given an inspiring account of how his athletics career started courtesy of a borrowed pair of shoes before several challenges nearly forced him out.
The 18-year-old has already earned the Africa 800m champion title and recently, she claimed the world under-20 800m title, competing at the World Under-20 Championships in Peru, Lima. She has since set ambitious targets and will be out to actualise them, with the full support of Mary Moraa.
“Nice piece...you have the whole world to conquer. All the best kid sister,” Moraa said in reply to an article by World Athletics.
Meanwhile, as per World Athletics, Sarah Moraa intends to follow in the footsteps of the Olympic 800m bronze medallist as she looks to make an impact in the world of track and field. She has hopes of having the world and Olympic titles to her name and also shattering the world record, when the right time comes.
Sarah Moraa started her journey at the age of 12 and she focused on running the 200m and 400m before eventually switching to the 800m following guidance from Mary Moraa. She pointed out that the sprints were more competitive than the 800m, one of the main reasons she made the move.
“The intensity and concentration in 800m is high compared to 200m and 400m, but I love how I am scaling the ladder through the guidance of Mary. She has been such an inspiration. I want to be the 800m world champion, Olympic champion, even to get the world record,” Sarah Moraa said.
