At the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels, Marco Arop finished third behind Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Djamel Sedjati in the men's 800m.

Marco Arop went into the men’s 800m final race at the Diamond League Meeting in Brussels with the hope of making an impact but was unfortunately forced to finish third.

The reigning world champion clocked 1:43.25 to round up the podium with Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the Olympic champion winning the race in great fashion as he clocked 1:42.70. Djamel Sedjati completed the podium in the race, clocking an impressive 1:42.86.

Speaking in a post-race interview, Arop expressed disappointment towards his performance, expressing his wishes to have performed a bit better. He added that the first 200m of the race were very tough and he struggled to keep up the pace with the strong competitors.

“We came through in 49 seconds low. I think we went out a bit too hard in the first 200m, but it was a great race. I just wish I could do better. I really hoped to take the win here, but the guys are so strong this year and it was not my perfect race,” he said.

The Olympic 800m silver medallist added that the 800m has become very tough since athletes are working harder. He added that the technology in making the spikes has also helped athletes run faster times.

He ends his long season in Brussels and will be looking to bounce back stronger next season, with the main focus being to defend his world title at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

“In my opinion there are different reasons for the current level in the 800m. The main one: everyone is working really hard. It is an Olympic year, which helps too to be in our best shape. Also, the track and the spikes are helping us,” Arop said.

“I am also experimenting with bicarbonate this year. This was my last race of the season. I am really happy about that. It was a long year but I am motivated to come back stronger next season.”
