Long-serving Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) president Hamad Kalkaba Malboum is set to be re-elected for a sixth four-year term which will take his tenure to 24 years by the time it ends in 2027.
The 72-year-old Cameroonian got the nod after his closest challenger, Nigerian Ibrahim Shehu Gusau, the outgoing CAA Vice President, stepped down in his favour on Tuesday.

Speaking in Lusaka, Zambia where the elective congress will take place on Thursday, Gusau said an understanding has been reached between himself and Malboum after the Council Meeting on Tuesday.
“Indeed, I did put myself forward to contest for the President of CAA because of my zeal to develop athletics in the continent,” Gusau told the media, as quoted by Nigeria’s The Sun.

“However, after today’s (Tuesday) meeting, we (Mr Kalakaba and I) upon discovering that we both have a common zeal and goal for the game to work together; and so, with a mutual understanding, I have decided to shove my ambition to the future as Malboum has my full support.”
With that, the incumbent, who first took office in 2003, is set to be re-elected unopposed on Thursday having also got the nod in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019.

Africa’s athletics has, however, not enjoyed a resurgence under his tenure with poorly organised events being blamed on his admiration as well as lack of capacity to deal with the doping menace.
