Reigning world 100m silver medallist Letsile Tebogo has released a statement following the news of his mother’s untimely demise.
It was reported that Seratiwa Tebogo lost her life following a short illness, and the time of her passing, Tebogo was in the US, competing at the USTAF Los Angeles Grand Prix where he finished second in the 100m.
The 20-year-old penned a heartfelt message expressing his sadness towards losing his mother, at a crucial time in his life and career. His mother was a very supportive parent and a pillar in his life and would always ensure she was at the forefront of cheering her son.

The world of athletics has been thrown into mourning following the loss of Letsile Tebogo's mother.
In the statement released, Tebogo and his entire family confirmed that Seratiwa lost her life on Sunday morning, May 19 and noted that she had left behind a legacy of love, strength, and unwavering support for her children and her entire family.

However, Tebogo’s family condemned the actions of the media who shared the troubling information without consulting the family first.
“We acknowledge that Letsile is in the public eye and so is part of his life but this breach of trust and blatant disregard for his emotions and privacy and has only added to our anguish during this difficult period.
“We condemn the insensitive behavior of those who chose to prioritise ‘breaking the news’ over empathy. It was in the best interest of our beloved icon that the news of his mother’s passing is not made public while he was away representing our country,” a part of the statement read.
They also urged the media to exercise sensitivity while reporting such news since the loss of a loved one cannot be overstated, and they noted that the dignity and wishes of the grieving family must be upheld and respected.
“As we mourn the loss of our dear ‘Sthando-Same’, we ask for your understanding and support during this profoundly difficult time. Funeral arrangements will be made in due course,” the statement concluded.
