Olympics 200m champion Letsile Tebogo has shared how his gold medal win was fueled by an irritating fan of his main rival Noah Lyles at the Paris 2024 Games.

Botswana sprinter Letsile Tebogo has revealed some behind the scenes intrigues during the Paris Olympics that pushed him to win gold in the 200m.

Tebogo went into the race as one of those looking to win a medal with three-time world champion Noah Lyles considered the overwhelming favourite to claim gold.

Lyles had already made a promise to ‘depress’ his rivals in the 200m final and entered into the stadium charged up, ready for the battle.

However, it was Tebogo who won the race with American Kenny Bednarek second as Lyles finished third, to the surprise of many.

Now, the 21-year-old has shared what went on in the stands, revealing that there was a lady in the crowd who kept shouting Lyles’ name as they prepared for the final, which got under his skin and further fueled his desire for success.

“We were eight on the track, at least she should have also called out others,” Tebogo said of the fan, as quoted by Botswana Daily News.

Tebogo says he remembered having beaten Lyles in their semi-final heat and knew it was possible for lighting to strike twice, which eventually turned out to be true.

“Well, I took a deep breath, and at the back of my mind I knew I had won against Noah Lyles in the semi-finals, and I just assumed that he was not his normal self, and capitalised on that,” he added.

A shocked Lyles spent some minutes lying on the track after the race before he was taken away on a wheelchair, later confirming that he had been suffering from COVID-19.

Tebogo has been celebrated for his win worldwide with Botswana rewarding him handsomely for delivering the country’s first-ever Olympics gold medal.

The sprinter was in action this week when he floored his rivals again to win the 200m race at the Lausanne Diamond League on Thursday.
