Femke Bol has won the past three editions of the Lausanne Diamond League and will be out to maintain her winning streak on Thursday.

The women’s 400 metres hurdles at the Lausanne Diamond League will see world champion Femke Bol seek redemption after missing gold at the Paris Olympics.

Bol has firmly established herself as the premier hurdler in the event, with a series of impressive performances that set her apart from the competition but had it tough in Paris when American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone destroyed the field to win gold.

Bol is the reigning champion in Lausanne, having won the event three consecutive, times from 2021 to 2023. Her dominance in the discipline is reflected in her consistent improvement, with her winning times decreasing from 53.05 in 2021 to a remarkable 52.76 in 2023.

This season, Bol further cemented her status as one of the world’s best with a series of outstanding performances. At the European Championships in Rome, she won her second gold medal, setting a championship record of 52.49.

Her Olympics was a mixed bag as she secured a bronze medal in the 400 metres hurdles, gold in the mixed 4x400 relay, and silver in the women’s 4x400 relay.

Bol also set a new European record with a time of 50.95 in La Chaux de Fonds, becoming only the second athlete ever to break the 51-second barrier. Her Diamond League victories in Stockholm (53.07) and London (51.30, a Diamond League record) underscore her exceptional form and readiness for the finals.

However, Bol’s path to victory in Lausanne will not be without competition. Rushell Clayton of Jamaica has emerged as a significant challenger. Clayton won the Jamaican trials with a time of 52.51 and finished fifth at the Olympics with 52.68. Her Diamond League wins in Marrakesh (53.98) and Oslo (54.02) demonstrate her capability to compete at the highest level.

Shamier Little also poses a threat. Despite a fourth-place finish at the US Olympic Trials, Little bounced back strongly by claiming two Olympic gold medals in the 4x400 relay and the mixed 4x400 relay. Her resilience and ability to perform on big stages make her a formidable opponent.

Other notable competitors include Janieve Russell, the Commonwealth Games gold medallist from Birmingham 2022 and fourth-place finisher at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics.

Andrenette Knight, who finished fourth at the London Diamond League meeting with a time of 53.69, and Louise Maraval from France, the European bronze medallist with a time of 54.23 in Rome, will also be in contention.

Ayomide Folorunso, who finished sixth at the World Championships in Budapest and fifth at the European Championships in Rome, adds to the depth of the field.

With her impressive track record and recent performances, Bol remains the clear favourite for the women’s 400 metres hurdles.

Nevertheless, the competition will be fierce, with several strong athletes looking to challenge her supremacy in what promises to be an exhilarating final.
