The 22-year-old will be lining up for the 400m race against a strong field on Saturday, April 29.

Reigning Commonwealth Games 800m champion Mary Moraa is raring to go as the Botswana Golden Grand Prix draws nearer. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 29 at the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone.

Moraa, who will be competing over the 400m category, revealed that her main aim going for the event is to work on her speed and improve on her time. Her personal best time over the one-lap race currently stands at 50.67.

“I will be competing in the 400m race this time round to improve on my time and speed…that is what my coach has planned for me,” she told Pulse Sports.

After the event, the world 800m bronze medallist revealed that her focus will now shift to the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The global showpiece is slated for August 19 to 27.

The 22-year-old will be looking to replicate last year’s performance or even perform much better this time round. During last year’s edition, Moraa settled for third-place which saw her set a new personal best time of 1:56.71.

USA’s Athing Mu and Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson took the first and second positions respectively.

“My coach will plan the races I will go to after Botswana but my main focus will be on the World Championships. I want to achieve a podium finish,” she said.

Moraa started off her season with the indoor tour that saw her post mixed results. She kickstarted her campaign at the Orlen Corpenicus Cup, a World Athletics Indoor Tour in Poland, where she managed to settle for fourth place in 2:01:51.

She then went for the World Athletics Meeting in Lievin, France and managed a second-place finish in 2:00.61. She concluded her tour at the World Indoor Tour in Madrid where she fizzled out to finish a disappointing eighth in 2:02.85.

She, however, revealed that she had not done enough training ahead of the events but noted that currently, her body is responding well. At the fifth Athletics Kenya meet at the Gusii Stadium in Kisii, she destroyed a strong field to win the 800m race by clocking 2:00.70.

“When I began my indoor tour, I had not trained well. However, at the moment my body is responding well and I am glad I have run some good times including the AK meet in Kisii. I am not at a bad place,” she said.
