Kipng'etich Ngeno has shared his feelings after missing out on the Kenyan Olympic team and how he is slowly bouncing back.

Africa 800m champion Kipng’etich Ngeno has opened up on how it felt missing out on the Kenyan Olympic team and bouncing back to focus on upcoming races.

Ngeno was a favourite to make the Kenyan team but faltered in the final of the event, clocking 1:43.74 to finish fourth and narrowly miss out on the team.

He disclosed that it has not been easy since he was sure of making the team and his coach was also confident he would do well at the trials but luck was not on his side. Ngeno noted that it is the nature of sport, to win some and lose others and his focus now shifts to Diamond League Meetings and Continental Tour events.

He added that after the Olympic Games, there will be many races and he is looking to compete well and ensure he clocks a personal best time ahead of next season where he has also set lofty targets.

“I’m training under coach Gabriel Kiptanui who has helped me a lot and I must admit we have come from far. He was eagerly waiting for me to make the Olympic team, however, with sports, you have to accept the outcomes,” Ngeno told Sport Lite 35.

“I was also sure that I would be in the team but I couldn’t…I believe I executed the race well until about 70m to go, that’s when my body got exhausted and I had no energy to overcome my competitors.”

Going into next season, Ngeno has opened up on plans to ensure he doubles in the 800m and 1500m. He is aware of the tough opposition awaiting him but is ready for the challenge.

The African Games 800m silver medallist was also quick to note that he will focus on the 1500m during the Diamond League Meetings but the 800m will still be his core event.

“I know next year, things will be tough since I will be contesting the 1500m and I intend to do both in the Diamond League Meetings,” he said.

“I have been confirmed for the meeting in Zagreb. After Olympics, there will be many races and I want to run under 1:42 this year.”
