Long distance star Jacob Kiplimo is doubtful for the 5,000m race at the 2023 World Athletics Championships due next month in Budapest, Hungary.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games double gold medallist has so far been confirmed for the 10,000m distance, leaving doubt whether he will participate in more than one race.

Despite Kiplimo's fine form at the 5000m distance, only Joshua Cheptegei has been confirmed for the double.

A reliable source intimated to Pulse Uganda Sports that Kiplimo has prioritised the World Half Marathon Championships, where he holds the World Record.

"Kiplimo is preparing for the World Half Marathon Championships," the informant said, adding, "If he participates in the double (5,000m and 10,000m), he cannot compete in the Half Marathon."

Kiplimo's coach Peter Chelangat was unavailable when contacted. Kiplimo holds the men's half-marathon world record, 57:31, set on 21 November 2021 during the Lisbon Half Marathon.

The inaugural World Athletics Road Running Championships will take place on 30 September and 1 October 2023 in Riga, Latvia. Kiplimo has won seven of his last ten significant races in a dominant spell.

ATHLETICS Kiplimo comes short in Monaco

Kiplimo's setback in Monaco serves as a stark reminder of the ever-changing dynamic of track and field, even for the most seasoned athletes, but also provides crucial lessons ahead of the World Championships in August.

However, ahead of the Budapest games, the 22-year-old posted two contrasting results over the 5000m distance, with his latest race ending in a shocking finish as he finished in sixth place in Monaco last week.

The race marked his first out-of-podium finish in almost two years as he posted a disappointing sixth place in the men's 5000m race at the Herculis Diamond League in Monaco.

Earlier last month, Kiplimo clocked the fifth fastest time in history with a 12:41.73 photo finish at the Oslo Diamond League.
