Kibiwott Kandie eyes a strong 2025 season start in China after battling injuries and a challenging 2024.

Kibiwott Kandie is looking to kickstart his 2025 season to a flying start as he toes the line for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Half Marathon scheduled for January 5.

He goes up against the likes of compatriots Stephen Kiprop and Weldon Langat. The Ethiopian duo of Milkesa Mengesha and Haftu Teklu are also some of the top entries announced.

The Kenyan distance sensation has endured a tough 2024 season and will be hoping to make amends and don the Kenyan jersey one more time in 2025.

He missed out on the Olympic team, seemingly due to an injury that also denied him a chance to compete at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Kandie had made the team to the event following his fourth-place finish at the trials but was forced to let go and nurse an injury that has been a nightmare to him.

The Commonwealth Games 10,000m bronze medallist competed sparingly this season, starting with the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona by Brooks where he won the race, a confidence booster as he went for the Kenyan Olympic trials in the 10,000m at the Prefontaine Classic.

However, his sixth-place finish at the trials was not enough to secure him a spot in the team and he never showed up for the 5000m trials at the Nyayo National Stadium. Kandie capped off his season with a 13th place finish at the Berlin Marathon.

In 2023, he did not have a smooth run either, starting with his sixth-place finish in the senior men’s race at the World Cross country championships in Bathurst, Australia. He then competed at the adizero Road to Records, finishing second in the men’s 10km road race.

Kandie did not rest on his laurels as he went on to claim double honours, in the 5000m and 10,000m at the Kenya Defense Forces Championships before claiming the 10,000m national title at the Kenyan Championships.

At the trials for the World Championships, he finished fourth and then after nursing his injury, he claimed top honours at the Valencia Half Marathon and then later finished sixth in the full marathon.

Meanwhile, the women’s race has been headlined by Ethiopian ace Gotytom Gebreslase with the Kenyan trio of Gladys Chepkurui, Sheila Chelangat and Miriam Chebet also making the list.
