The 25-year-old stayed in the leading pack for most of the race and was rewarded with a silver medal amid stiff competition from favourites Bashir and Nageeye
Kenya's Timothy Kiplagat clocked his personal best as he claimed second place at the 42nd edition of the Rotterdam Marathon on Sunday.
Kiplagat clocked 2:03:50 to finish behind Belgian Bashir Abdi (2:03:48), the course record holder, who reclaimed his title from homeboy Abdi Nageeye, third place finisher on the day.
The Kenyan stayed in the leading pack for most of the race, keeping pace with Bashir and his compatriot Dawit Wolde from the 30km mark.
The Abu Dhabi and Melbourne Marathon champion would exchange leads with the Olympics bronze medalist until the final 5km when the 2021 champion took command of the race on his way to the finish line.
Bashir was 12 seconds slower than his personal best, the course record he set in Rotterdam two years ago, but victory offered redemption after failing to defend his title last year, following a fourth-place finish.
Kiplagat, meanwhile, bettered his personal best, having run 2:05:20 on his way to winning in Abu Dhabi last December, and with the improved time, he will be looking to build onto it as he bids to enter the major marathons in future.
Kenya’s Kenneth Kikemoi (2:08:15) and Cyrus Muati (2:08:18) finished ninth and 10th respectively.
Meanwhile, Kenyan-born Bahraini Eunice Chumba clocked 2:20:31 to win the women’s race.
