Kenyan-born American long-distance runner Aliphine Tuliamuk has termed her performance at the just concluded Boston Marathon as a ‘mediocre race.’

Tuliamuk, who became a US citizen seven years ago, revealed that she will have to redeem herself in another race before the 2024 US Olympic trials.

She expressed her disappointment with posting the results and noted that she wanted more than what she achieved.

“I wanted more than that…I wanted to see if I could compete with some of the best athletes in the world and I don’t feel like I put myself in a place where I could have done that.

There are a lot of wishes that I have and I believe I gave it everything that matters. I’ll see how I come off this setback. I can’t just get away with such a mediocre performance,” she said.

In the race that saw two-time world 5000m champion Hellen Obiri take top honours, Tuliamuk settled for 11th place in 2:24:37. She revealed that her performance was a sign that she has a lot to do going forward.

She revealed that she was unwell at some point but couldn’t stop going for training in preparation for the marathon. However, she said that was not an excuse for her poor performance considering she went into the race in good shape.

“I need more practice going forward. I got sick three times in the past six weeks but I never missed any workouts. That’s not an excuse for my performance because I went into the race in my best shape. I gave it my all but unfortunately, it was not the best,” she said.

She also lauded USA’s Emma Bates for her remarkable performance that saw her become the first American woman to cross the finish line. She clocked 2:22:10, a new personal best time, to cross the finish line fifth.

Tuliamuk said Bates’ performance was inspirational enough for her to know she can also post great results going forward.

“Her performance was incredible and I’m really proud of her. It’s very inspiring,” she said.

During the 2020 US Olympic trials, Tuliamuk obliterated a strong field to win the women’s marathon but shortly after that, she took a maternity leave.

She disclosed that coming back into the competitive field has not been an easy ride for her but she will keep pushing.

“I still have a long way to go to get to where I want to be. I have a lot of work to do,” she said.
