Eliud Kipchoge's world record might be in danger since the Chicago Marathon has assembled a deep men's field.

Records are expected to fall as 31 men brace up for a tough battle at the Chicago Marathon scheduled for Sunday, October 8.

Defending champion Benson Kipruto will be facing a daunting task in his quest to defend his title since the race has attracted one of the most qualified fields in the history of the Chicago Marathon.

Kipruto won last year’s marathon in a time of 2:04:24 and he will have to dig deep for a win this time around. Kipruto opened his season with a third-place finish at the Boston Marathon and he will also be looking to end his season on a high by defending his title.

One of the greatest opponents will be 23-year-old Kelvin Kiptum, the second-fastest marathoner in the world.

The London Marathon champion has made his intentions of going for the course record clear. Earlier this year in London, he clocked 2:01:25 to win the race and as he heads to the streets of Chicago, winning is also a major part of his plans.

Kiptum’s 2:01:53 winning time at the 2022 Valencia Marathon was the fastest debut in history and he is just getting started. Only three men in history have run under 2:02:00, and Kiptum is the only marathoner to do it under the age of 35.

The Kenyan duo will face tough opposition from Belgium’s Bashir Abdi who lines up with a Personal Best time of 2:03:36. He could play spoiler after earning bronze at the Tokyo Olympics and last year’s World Championships in Oregon.

Ethiopia’s Seifu Tura will also be returning to US soil after winning the title in 2021 and earning runner-up honours in 2022. With his mastery of the course, he will also prove to be unbeatable. He will enjoy the company of compatriot Kinde Atanaw, the fourth-place finisher at last year’s London Marathon (2:05:27).

Two-time Olympic medallist Galen Rupp will lead the home charge. The 37-year-old will be looking to make his fifth Olympic team next year.

He has a strong competitive record in Chicago, where he won the marathon in 2017 (2:09:20) and earned runner-up honours in 2021 (2:06:35).

In 2022, he returned from injury to place 19th at the World Championships (2:09:36) but dropped out of the New York City Marathon in November. He has not raced this year since his lackluster 17th-place showing at the March NYC Half Marathon (1:04:57).

Rupp will be joined by Conner Mantz, a 26-year-old who was the top American finisher in Chicago last year in 2:08:16—the second-fastest US debut ever.

Mantz has been racing extremely well on the track and roads this year, including a high-altitude win at the Bolder Boulder 10K in May and his recent runner-up showings at the Beach to Beacon 10K in August and the US 20K Championships in September.

Other top entrants include Leonard Korir (2:07:56 PB), Matt McDonald (2:09:49 PB) and Eritrean-born Daniel Mesfun (2:10:06 PB), who just received US citizenship in May.
