Keely Hodgkinson has been recognised for her Olympics heroics after being bestowed with a prestigious title by Britain’s King Charles.

Olympics 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson’s remarkable year has ended in style after being honoured by Britain’s King Charles.

Hodgkinson, who was recently crowned the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, has been appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by King Charles in his New Year Honours list for her contribution to athletics.

The 22-year-old Manchester-born athlete became the first gold Olympics gold medallits from track for Great Britain since Mo Farah in 2016 after flooring her rivals to claim gold in Paris ahead of Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma and Kenya’s Mary Moraa, the world champion.

“It’s so amazing to be recognised and to have been given this award. This year has been incredibly special for so many reasons and it’s such a nice surprise to have been honoured in this way. Bring on 2025,” said a delighted Hodgkinson.

Also receiving MBE awards were former world champions Dina Asher-Smith and Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

Asher-Smith, the 2019 world champion in 200m, is Britain’s fastest woman as she is the British record holder in both 100m and 200m while Johnson-Thompson won the world heptathlon gold in 2019 and 2023 before claiming silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

It has been an impressive year for Hodgkinson, who stayed unbeaten throughout her season en route to her Olympics glory, after which an injury forced her out from the rest of the campaign as she missed out on the Diamond League title.
