American sprint icon Justin Gatlin on why Fraser-Pryce and Thompson-Herah possibly reuniting with Shericka Jackson at MVP track club would be scary.

American sprint legend Justin Gatlin has shared his thoughts on why the rumored return of Jamaican sprint icons Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah to Stephen Francis' MVP Track Club could be "scary" for their global competitors.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Fraser-Pryce parted ways with Francis and established the Elite Performance Track Club with Reynaldo Walcott, a former MVP coach who had been training professional sprinters since 2016.

Similarly, Thompson-Herah left MVP in 2021, opting to train with her husband, Derron Herah. However, after struggling to reach her previous form, she joined Fraser-Pryce at Elite Performance in a bid to regain her competitive edge.

But following a disappointing failure to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Thompson-Herah is rumored to be heading back to Francis' camp, with reports suggesting Fraser-Pryce might follow suit.

The move would reunite the two sprint queens with Shericka Jackson, who continues to train at MVP, as well as rising stars like the Clayton twins, Tia and Tina, and Olympic 100m silver medalist Kishane Thompson.

In his Ready Set Go podcast, Gatlin didn’t hold back his excitement, saying, “They will be out there foaming like veterans if that happens.

“That would be crazy. I feel like that right there needs to be a documentary itself. Watching all these ladies and Franno come back together for a special year, it might be some of their last hurrahs, and to really watch them train hard like they have never done before.”

Gatlin went on to highlight the significance of the rivalry between Fraser-Pryce and Thompson-Herah, which has redefined women's sprinting.

“The clash between Shelly and Elaine birthed a level of female sprinting with our sport that we haven’t seen in years. We have one-offs like Carmelita Jeter running 10.6 or Veronica Campbell-Brown doing 10.7, but to have three women who can consistently perform at that level was unheard of. It was like all the stars aligned.”

Reflecting on their past achievements, Gatlin continued, “You watched Shelly-Ann or Elaine drop 10.7s, then 10.6s. Shelly-Ann ran 10.6, then Elaine ran 10.5, and now Shericka is on 10.6. It’s a slugfest, and that’s what I want to see again.

“Watching them go at it, especially the ones who have been injured, brings back incredible memories.”

If Fraser-Pryce and Thompson-Herah indeed return to MVP, the sprinting world could be in for a blockbuster season, as the club becomes a hub for elite female sprinters vying for supremacy one last time under the tutelage of the legendary Stephen Francis.
