The former Olympic champion does not think it is a good idea for the world's sexiest athlete to switch to the 800m just yet.

The world’s sexiest athlete Alica Megan Schmidt announced that she will be switching to the 800m, something that has raised eyebrows within the athletics world with Justin Gatlin and Rodney Green also commenting on the same.

Justin Gatlin, the 2004 Olympic champion explained that she is making a very big move, switching to another distance before even becoming dominant in her race at the moment. Gatlin pointed out that 400m and 800m are competitive races, highlighting the presence of Marileidy Paulino in the 400m and the big three in the 800m.

Mary Moraa, Keely Hodgkinson and Athing Mu have for the past three years dominated the 800m and Alica Schmidt joining the three is no guarantee that she will perform well in the two-lap race. However, Gatlin gave her the benefit of the doubt, noting that the 800m might be the race where she actually has a chance to compete and do well.

“Actually, I think she is jumping from the frying pan into the direct fire and I commend her on the fact that you may have felt like as an athlete that you were placed in a race that you may have grown to like, but in actuality, she might have the endurance and foot speed to be a pretty good 800m runner. Maybe she wants to test her legs and see where it takes her,” Justin Gatlin said on the Ready Set Go podcast.

Commenting on the same, Rodney Green was still insisting, noting that she has yet to prove herself in the 400m and there is no chance that switching distances would be of benefit.

He noted that athletes tend to get bored after dominating their distances and he would not be surprised if the Olympic 400m champion decides to switch to the 800m after mastering the 400m and conquering everything.

However, Alica Schmidt’s switch to the 800m comes as a surprise to Rodney Green who believes she should have waited a bit longer and at least win some of her 400m races before switching to the longer distance.

“I don’t know if they are just saying things because perspective-wise you’re not conquering the event that you are in and you are going up and challenging people who are conquering their own event respectfully in their own right by running world records, or world leads or times we haven’t seen in a long time and then you are going to call them out, it doesn’t make sense,” Green said.

“If someone like Paulino would want to switch to the 800m, it would make sense because she’s been on a tear. You have to win your event to be bored, you have to dominate your event first.”
