Julius Yego is disappointed with his performance at the Kenyan Olympic trials but has promised to bounce back at the Africa Senior Athletics Championships.

The 2015 world javelin champion Julius Yego was looking to impress and attain the qualification standards at the Kenyan Olympic trials but he failed to achieve the feat.

Yego could only manage to throw 76.42m with the Olympic qualifying standard for the men being 85.50m. The former Olympic silver medallist expressed disappointment with his throws and could not comprehend what never worked for him at the Nyayo National Stadium.

However, he still holds his head high as he chases the standards at the Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Cameroon. The qualifying window period comes to an end on June 30 and he is in a race against time to achieve that as he seeks to make his final appearance at the Olympics.

“I wasn’t happy with my performance at the trials because I didn’t throw the distance I was expecting but I just accepted the outcome because in a competition, anything can happen and I just have to accept and move forward,” Yego said.

“I don’t know what didn’t work for me, I’m yet to find out because the javelin refused to fly, that’s the only thing I can say.

“For now, I’m focusing on the African Championships that will happen in Cameroon and I hope that I will have one competition before the continental showpiece and that will help me to know where I stand."

The Commonwealth Games champion made his Olympic Games debut at the 2012 London Olympics before impressing at the 2016 Rio Olympics with a silver medal.

However, injuries flocked Yego’s life and he failed to make an impact at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and as he looks to head to Paris, the 35-year-old hopes to be majestic in his final appearance at the Games.
