St Lucia has decided to celebrate Julien Alfred by naming a national in her honour after she became the country’s first-ever Olympics gold medalist.

Olympics 100m champion Julien Alfred will be celebrated in her country Saint Lucia with a national holiday named in her honour.

September 27 will officially become ‘Julien Alfred Day’ which will be marked to celebrate the sprinter for winning the country’s first-ever Olympics gold medal.

The event will be preceded by days of celebrations, culminating in a free concert on the day of the holiday.

Alfred will return home on September 24 and there are plans to receive her with a motorcade before more celebrations at schools in the island nation the following day.

According to SportsMax, the athlete will then unveil a mural of herself at a primary school on the island.

The 23-year-old clocked a national record 10.27 seconds to win gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics ahead of American world champion Sha’Carri Richardson, who managed 10.87 for silver, and her US compatriot Melissa Jefferson, who timed 10.92, for bronze.

"I'm thinking of God [and] my dad, who didn't get to see me," Alfred said after her victory.

"He passed away in 2013. Dad, this is for you. I miss you. I did it for him, I did it for my coach and God."

Alfred later won Olympics silver in the 200m behind American Gabby Thomas.
