Julien Alfred had to settle for silver at the Paris Olympic games in the 200 meters
Reigning Olympic 100m champion Julien Alfred has issued a clear message to Gabby Thomas and Shericka Jackson regarding her quest for improvement in the 200 meters after settling for silver in Paris.
Alfred, who stunned the world by defeating the USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson to claim the 100m title, fell short in the 200m final.
She finished second behind Gabby Thomas, who dominated the race en route to securing the first of her three Olympic gold medals. Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson, a formidable force in the 200m, was absent due to injury.

'I could have retired at 25 or 21'- Yohan Blake on the tempting offers that nearly forced him to ditch Jamaica
The Jamaican sprinter revealed that loyalty to Jamaica and financial responsibilities have kept him competing, despite opportunities to retire much earlier.
Speaking to SportsMax last November, the Saint Lucian sprinter, who attended high school in Jamaica before moving to Texas to pursue her career at Kentucky, shared her thoughts on the race.
“I think I was fatigued, and I was overthinking a lot. It was the final race, so I was just thinking, ‘let’s get it over and done with,’” Alfred revealed.
She also highlighted the challenges she faced in preparation: “Even after the 100m, I went to bed so late and only got two hours of sleep. I barely warmed up. I did some accelerations, and my coach told me to just go out there and be done with it.”
“I was overthinking each phase, and it was a lot. I should have just run all out, and if Gabby caught up with me, so be it.”

Benson Omala: The contract nightmare keeping him away from Gor Mahia
Benson Omala is still in the dark where he will be playing next after recent release by Al Safa SC and Gor Mahia have clarified why they won't engage him for now.
With the 2025 season fast approaching, Alfred is focused on refining her strategy to take her 200m performances to another level. She is well aware that Thomas remains the woman to beat, while Jackson is working hard to reclaim her status as the best female 200m athlete in the world.
“I think I have a lot to work on,” Alfred acknowledged. “I have to get stronger, strengthen my core more, and, on the track, become stronger mentally and physically.”
“My coach is going to help me improve my mindset towards the 200m, getting stronger and becoming more comfortable in the race. I might train longer hours, but I think he is helping me become mentally tougher, especially for the 200.”
Alfred admitted that her previous perception of the event may have limited her growth in the discipline: “Growing up, I was not really big on the 200m, and I think I developed a mindset that I wasn’t good at it, even though I’ve proven myself in the event.”

AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda explodes as Kasarani renovations force Mashemeji derby into uncertainty
Shikanda has proposed moving the Mashemeji Derby to Tanzania or Uganda due to the unavailability of a suitable venue in Kenya.
“I have never really committed myself to running the 200m, even though I have the strength and heart for it. The way I approach the 200m is different from how I prepare for the 100m or 60m.”
With a renewed focus and a determination to elevate her 200m race execution, Alfred is setting her sights on dethroning Thomas while preparing for the return of Jackson.
If her improvements come to fruition, the women’s 200m battle could be one of the most electrifying rivalries of the coming seasons.
