Julien Alfred has opened up about how learning about Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce's story motivated her to keep going despite tons of challenges in her athletics journey.
Julien Alfred has explained how Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s story to the top inspired her to take track and field seriously, owing to the fact that they share almost similar backgrounds.
Born in Saint Lucia, Julien Alfred was forced to relocate to Jamaica two years after her father’s death. Julien Alfred was only 12 when she lost her father. She revealed that track and field would be her only way out of poverty and she had to take it seriously.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, coming from a humble background also knew that track and field would be her savior and having talked about her upbringing, she explained how her mother was always supportive of her talent. The Jamaican sprint legend pointed out that her mother was also a runner but she had to stop after being expectant with her younger brother.

Andrew Alamisi dominated the men’s under-20 8km race at the 2nd Athletics Kenya Cross Country meet in Kapsokwony, aiming to improve his endurance for an upcoming race in Italy.
From Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Julien Alfred sees a story of resilience and hard work and she explained that just like the 10-time world champion, she also wants to make a name for herself and show the world that a person’s background does not define their future.
She did not rule out the fact that there have been many challenges she has faced in her journey but revealed that hearing Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s story has helped her face every obstacle bravely.
“I think using where she came from as a motivation to build that as an athlete and using track and field to get her out of her circumstances. You know, I’ve had her story and I’ve heard that her mom said to her that track and field was a way out and I took that as well and used it in my circumstance, you know,” Julien Alfred told Ato Boldon in an interview.
“I’ve had struggles in my career especially at an early age when I was in my community, coming from a small community and you know my earlier struggles have also motivated me into getting to where I want to be. I think that in particular, using track and field to get out of my circumstances and get me to where I want to be, so I think that in particular helped me,” she added.
This season, Julien Alfred had one of the best seasons, winning the Olympic title in the women’s 100m at the Paris Olympic Games after outsmarting Sha’Carri Richardson. She also claimed the silver in the women’s 200m, finishing second behind Gabby Thomas.
Julien Alfred was not done making waves as she proceeded to claim top honours in the women’s 100m at the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels.
