Jamaican sprinter Janeek Brown has been in the news recently owing to her past relationship with American speedster Sha’Carri Richardson.
As Richardson’s rumoured romance with fellow sprinter Christian Coleman has become a hot topic, so was the news of her past relationships, and that is how Brown has found herself thrust into the limelight.
Richardson and Brown dated from 2019 to 2022 before their highly-publicized breakup that saw the American accuse her Jamaican lover of abusing and also stealing from her.
At the time, the two were in the formative years of their sprinting careers but two years later, Richardson is a global superstar while Brown is still finding her feet.
So, who is the Jamaican sprinter that dated one of the world’s top athletes?
Early years
Janeek Brown is a 26-year-old Jamaican sprinter who specializes in the 100m hurdles. Born in Kingston, Brown honed her running career in the United States where she ran for her college team while at the University of Arkansas.
She clocked 12.40 seconds, her personal best, when winning the 2019 NCAA Championships, running for the University of Arkansas as a sophomore. The same year, she earned her fifth NCAA Division I All-American track and field award.
This came after she had represented Jamaica at the 2014 Youth Olympics while she also won gold in 100m hurdles and 4x400m relay at the U17 Carifta (Caribbean Free Trade Association) Games as well as silver in 100m hurdles in U20 of the same event.
Olympics & World Championships
Brown represented Jamaica in 100m hurdles at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar and made it to the final where she finished seventh after clocking 12.88 seconds.
She also made her Olympics debut in Paris this year, having finished third in the 100m hurdles at the Jamaican trials (12.61 seconds).
At the Olympics, she finished third (12.84 seconds) in the first round to seal a place in the semi-final but could not get past that stage after a seventh-place finish (12.92 seconds) in her heat.
Dating & breakup with Richardson
As mentioned earlier, Brown dated Richardson from 2019-2022 with the two supporting each other in their careers.
All seemed well until 2022 when Richardson dropped the bombshell, confirming their breakup while giving reasons that led to the split.
“I was in a relationship with a Jamaican athlete that never cared about me from jump,” the then 22-year-old Richardson shared on her Instagram stories.
“I was abused and stole from yet protected her from the judgment of her country and family while they dragged me. I had to deal with homophobic and so much more that I’m still healing from.”
Brown later admitted to Richardson’s allegations, having initially claimed that the American was lying.
“I was abusive once that there's physical evidence of. And we moved on, and even after then, I was trying to move on from that, we still got nowhere,” said Brown.
“Yeah, I was going through something – I was finding myself, that's why I am coming to social media, you feel me? So yeah, it's a transformation; I'm going to find myself now. I may look different now.”
