In a disappointing turn of events, middle-distance Janat Chemusto has been excluded from participating in the upcoming 2023 World Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place in Budapest, Hungary by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

The AIU announced the suspension August 6 revealing that Chemusto's test had yielded positive results for the banned substance Norandrosterone. This unfortunate development has led to her violation of both Article 2.1 and Article 2.2 of the World Athletics Rules.

"Janat Chemusto from Uganda has been placed under provisional suspension due to the presence or use of a prohibited substance," part of the statement released by AIU reads.

Chemusto had successfully secured her qualification for the prestigious World Championships and was poised to represent Uganda alongside Winnie Nanyondo in the 1500m race.

A standout performance at the 2023 KipKeino Classic in Nairobi had firmly established Chemusto's prowess on the track.

Her remarkable feat involved securing the gold medal in the 1500m event. As the race entered its final stretch, Chemusto impressively surged ahead, distancing herself from the leading pack and clocking an impressive time of 4:01.79.

This marked a significant improvement over her previous record of 4:14.30, approaching the national record held by her teammate Nanyondo, which stands at 3:59.56.

Regrettably, Chemusto's personal best is now overshadowed by her suspension due to the prohibited substance violation.

Over thirteen athletes from various corners of the world were also suspended.
