Gabby Thomas, Masai Russell, Athing Mu, Justin Gatlin and other athletes congratulate Noah Lyles & Junelle Bromfield after engagement
The athletics family united in sending their best wishes to Noah Lyles and Junelle Bromfield after their engagement with Gabby Thomas, Masai Russell and Athing Mu among them.
“I think that’s when you feel the pressure when you think about the country, the world…when you look at this (points to the Jamaican logo on his sweater) and remember that this is watching, whether the US or Jamaica,” Asafa Powell said.
“You have to treat the Olympic final as a Diamond League or whatever it is. When you treat it as just another race because these are the same guys that you are running with, but when you add that Olympic or World Championships, it kinds of puts you under pressure.
“If you are just doing it for yourself when you cross the finish line, then you know it’s for everybody. Before that, just focus on you, put your mind on you.”
He also pointed out that Jamaican fans can be ruthless when an athlete does not perform as expected but warned Kishane Thompson not to focus on such.
Asafa Powell acknowledged that the fans will only give you peace when you are performing but anytime an athlete messes up, they go against him/her.
“Jamaica is not a country to carry on your back, these people are very very hard on the athletes, very tough. They love you to death but they are hard on the athletes so Jamaica is not a country to carry on your back. You need to focus on yourself, be yourself, be selfish,” he added.
