Marauding Norwegian Viking Jakob Ingebrigtsen lowered the men’s 3000m record set by Kenyan Daniel Komen in Rieti 1997 as he led a filed of highly acclaimed middle and long distance runners in Sileia, Poland.

Employing his favored front running, Ingebrigtsen clocked 7:17.55 to shave more than three seconds from Komen's 7:20.55 time set in Rieti in 1997.

Ethiopia's Berihu Aregawi gave chase to Ingebrigtsen and was rewarded with an impressive personal best time of 7:21.28 which also Ethiopia's new national record.

After attempting to go toe to toe with the Norwegian, lanky Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha faded off spectacularly was able to retain third spot in 7:28.44 followed in 4th by another Ethiopian 7:30.97.

Kenya's Roger Kwemoi clocked 7:31.57 in 5th.

Belgian pacer Pieter Sisk set the tone for a world record by leading the field through the first lap in a scorching 58.59 and the first 1000m in 2:27.06 which was well inside Komen's time when he set the now obliterated record. The only question was if the field would maintain the required pace to see through the new record.

The question was partially answered when a determined looking Ingebrigtsen powered past the 2000m mark in 4:55.21 trailed by an equally agitated Kejelcha towering in second spot and marching the distance between him and the Norwegian. Aregawi was close by in 3rd.

Sustained speeding by Ingebrigtsen eventually took its toll on Kejelcha who just could not keep up leaving Aregawi to do his best at trailing. A huge gap of over 20 meters emerged between Ingebrigtsen and Aregawi as the bell for final lap toll and from then onwards everyone in the stadium was on their feet to cheer the Norwegian to another world record.
