The reigning 1500m Olympic champion beat the Kenyan duo of Timothy Cheruiyot and Brian Komen in Monaco, and he has now explained the secrets behind his return to form.

Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen has shared the secret behind his return to form after  made history on Friday evening (12) at the Monaco Diamond League, becoming just the fourth athlete in history to break the 3:27 barrier for the 1500 meters. 

Ingebrigtsen took his European record from 3:27.14 down to a world-leading 3:26.73. The 23-year-old’s performance included a scintillating last lap of 54.0 seconds, propelling him to the sixth fastest time in history and the world’s fastest time since 2015.

Ingebrigtsen’s record-breaking run marks the fourth time he has broken the European outdoor 1500m record since 2021.

 He now holds the six fastest outdoor times in history by a European athlete, adding to his numerous accolades.

Ingebrigtsen faced a formidable field in Monaco, including all of his principal rivals except reigning world champion Josh Kerr.

The reigning Olympic champion brushed aside the competition with an irresistible last 450 meters, winning by two seconds from Kenyans Timothy Cheruiyot (3:28.71) and Brian Komen (3:28.80). 

Yared Nuguse from the United States finished fourth in 3:29.13. Niels Laros, who recently broke the world U20 1000m record, saw his race come to an unfortunate end after a heavy fall in the first 300 meters.

Reflecting on his performance and looking ahead to the Paris 2024 Olympics, Ingebrigtsen expressed his excitement and confidence.

“I feel amazing. It is truly amazing how we as athletes develop ourselves and run even faster at almost every competition we participate in,” Ingebrigtsen said.

 “I really enjoy competing in Monaco, especially when a lot of Norwegian fans are here. That helps me a lot. I will continue doing what I have always been doing.”

Ingebrigtsen emphasized the importance of believing in his training and physical development.

 “I will continue developing physically and continue believing in my training. I see that I am increasing my potential every year. It is really important for athletes to believe in what they are doing. When you achieve great results, it is easier to be confident for future competitions.”

Looking ahead to the Paris Olympics, Ingebrigtsen shared his excitement and determination. “I am excited about Paris. I feel strong, I will do my best and hopefully bring home the gold medal.”

With his record-breaking form and unwavering confidence, Jakob Ingebrigtsen is poised to be a strong contender in the 1500 meters at the Paris 2024 Olympics, promising an exciting race and a potential gold medal for Norway.
