Letsile Tebogo has highlighted the major thing that Africa needs to work on to be able to host a 'senior' Olympic Games.

Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo believes Africa can host the Olympic Games if the relevant stakeholders come together and work towards a common goal.

The world 100m silver medallist noted that with unity, the International Olympic Committee will see it fit to have one African country host the Games, explaining that it would be a major boost for African athletes.

Being a history maker himself, Letsile Tebogo pointed out that he has never seen any major senior track event being hosted in Africa, where top American and European athletes would travel to Africa to compete.

However, there are several junior events held in Africa, including the 2021 World Under-20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya. Africa is set to host the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal but with time, the sprinter believes there is a possibility of hosting the ‘senior’ Olympic Games.

Being at the forefront of African sprinting, the 21-year-old added that he has always been travelling to Europe and America and it's high time the vice versa is implemented.

“I think it’s something that is going to be seen, but when, I don’t know but it’s something that we are going to change. What I think is supposed to change is us Africans coming together and being united as one continent and stopping pulling both sides. Once we pull both sides, people are going to see that those people can’t host the Olympics,” Letsile Tebogo told NBC Sport.

“It really means a lot to the African continent because most of the time it’s us travelling to Europe and America to compete in those Games. We have never gotten that chance to see Americans and European countries come into the African continent,” he added.

The world 200m bronze medallist has placed Africa on the world map when it comes to sprinting and has changed the narrative on many occasions. At last year’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Letsile Tebogo became the first African to claim a medal in the men’s 100m at a World Championship.

In the men’s 200m, Letsile Tebogo continued the hot streak to win a bronze medal. At this year’s Olympic Games, the Motswana sprinter also became the first African to win a gold medal in the 200m. He propelled the Botswanan 4x400m relay team to a silver medal at the event, winning Botswana’s first-ever silver medal in the relay on an Olympic stage.

He maintained a great post-Olympic form to claim the Diamond League Meeting wins in Lausanne, Rome and Zurich before finishing second at the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels.
