The Dutchwoman added another title to her trophy cabinet as her stellar career takes shape.
Paris Olympics marathon champion Siffan Hassan was left speechless after being crowned the 2024 Women’s World Athlete of the Year on December 1 at the annual global awards in Monaco.
The Dutchwoman became the first female athlete in history to win medals in the 5000m, 10,000m and marathon at the same Olympics. After bronzes in both the 5000m and 10,000m, the 31-year-old won a stunning gold medal over 26.2 miles, defeating then world-record holder Tigst Assefa around the Parisian course.
Her triumph in the marathon in an Olympic record of 2:22:55, came just 37 hours after Hassan claimed bronze in the 10,000m, and six days after her first medal in the French capital – also bronze – in the 5000m.

Revealed: Why phenomenal Sifan Hassan does not own a home of her own despite being a three-time Olympic champion
Despite being a three-time Olympic champion, Ethiopian-born Dutch phenomenon Siffan Hassan does not own a home, and her coach has revealed the reason why.
Only the legendary Emil Zátopek, who claimed golds in all three of those distances at the Helsinki 1952 Games, has achieved that feat. Hassan's performance attracted much attention and her crown indeed wasn't surprising if her performances were anything to go by.
"Thank you to the fans, to everybody who voted,” Hassan told Athletics Weekly. "I never thought I was going to win this one. This year was crazy. It’s not only me – all the athletes have been amazing. I’m really grateful. What more can I say?”

Hellen Obiri reflects on missing out Paris 2024 Olympic gold to Sifan Hassan: 'You can’t force things to happen'
Why Hellen Obiri has become content with the bronze medal she won in Paris last August, making it her third career Olympic medal.
Hassan is one of the most decorated athletes because of her specialty in different races. At the World Athletics Championships, Hassan took 1500m and 10,000m titles in 2019, becoming the only athlete, male or female, in history to win both events at a single World Championships or Olympic Games.
She holds six European records (1500m, 3000m, 5000m, 10,000m, half marathon, marathon) and three other Dutch records.
