Timothy Cheruiyot's track rival Jakob Ingebrigtsen has given a candid explanation on why the Kenyan might struggle in his move to the 5000m.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen believes Timothy Cheruiyot’s switch to the 5000m will not be like climbing a sugar candy following the strong runners who have emerged in the recent past.

The 5000m consists of runners from Ethiopia, Kenya and Ingebrigtsen, who have always been fighting for the top spot and the Norwegian athlete pointed out that Cheruiyot’s move to the 5000m will be one difficult task.

In an interview with Pura Vida Sports, the reigning Olympic 5000m champion also acknowledged the fact that Cheruiyot is a great competitor and he looks forward to competing against him once he moves up to the 5000m.

“I think it’s gonna be difficult for him. Obviously, the 5,000m is a very tough race with very strong runners, and right now the level is very good, but Timothy is a good racer and has been a good rival and my competitor for many, many years and so I look forward to competing with him and we’ll see if he can make it,” Ingebrigtsen said.

Cheruiyot had earlier expressed interest in switching to the 5000m after a successful run in the 1500m. He explained that there is no motivation for him to run the 1500m anymore since he has been in the game for long.

At the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels, Cheruiyot explained that he was looking to claim top honours and was well-prepared mentally but things did not go as expected. Ingebrigtsen claimed the win in 3:30.37 as Cheruiyot finished second, clocking 3:30.93 to cross the finish line. Olympic champion Cole Hocker sealed the podium after clocking 3:30.94.

“I was well-prepared, I was so confident and I was expecting to win today, but nonetheless the season is over and I’m happy that my body is responding well,” Cheruiyot said.

“I’ve been in the 1,500m for long and, maybe, next year I will go up to the 5,000m. I’ve been running 1,500m for the last nine years, and so next year I’ll try out both the 5,000m and 1,500m,” he added.
