Sabastian Sawe has reacted to his unexpected victory at the Valencia Marathon.

Sabastian Sawe has expressed satisfaction following his dominant victory at the Valencia Marathon just in his debut.

Sawe clocked the fastest time this year to claim top honours in the race, something he was not expecting. The Kenyan road running ace was only expecting a great result but was not sure about his potential to win the race.

He clocked a stunning 2:02:05 to finish the race ahead of Deresa Geleta and Daniel Mateiko who finished second and third in respective times of 2:02:38 and 2:04:23.

This also marked a huge milestone for Mateiko who finally finished a marathon race after debuting at last year’s London Marathon where he failed to finish the race. He also failed to finish the 2023 Chicago Marathon and the 2024 London Marathon.

“I’m excited, I’m happy…today being my first time running a full marathon in Valencia. It’s a great moment for me. It was my first time and fortunately, I won the race and it was so good for me. The city of Valencia is very nice and I’ve had an amazing time, my first personal best time and everything was so good,” Sabastian Sawe said after the race.

He had expressed confidence in his training in a pre-race interview and explained that he was ready to attack the course. His previous outings in Valencia for the half marathon have not been the best and he was determined to work on that.

He first raced at the 2022 Valencia Half Marathon where he finished sixth before finishing fifth at the 2023 edition of the race.

“This time, I hope for good results, I have trained well and I’m well prepared for it. I’m eager to run with mentors like Sisay Lemma and Kenenisa Bekele who are strong opponents and I hope they help me to run well and I hope to get good results. It will be my first time running the full marathon and I don’t want to predict any fast times but I’m ready,” he said before the race.

He also had a message for the people who lost their loved ones during the floods in Valencia, saying: “My condolences for the tragedy that happened to the people of Valencia, it was so sad and I want to urge people to pray for them and urge people to give them peace.”
