Faith Kipyegon competed at the Athlos women's event for one primary reason as she ended up getting $60,000 (Ksh.7.73 million) richer in New York

Faith Kipyegon has opened up about her main motivation to compete at Athlos, Alexis Ohanian’s women-only event.

The double world champion teased about money being at the centre of it all but pointed out that motivating young girls remains the main reason why she chose to compete in the race. However, the monetary value also played a role in her decision to compete in New York City but it was not the main reason.

Faith Kipyegon added that she has never received such an amount of money in one race since she started running. The three-time Olympic 1500m champion also urged World Athletics to invest more in women’s sports since it is one way of encouraging the younger generation.

The triple world champion added that she felt special to be honoured in such a way, receiving the highest prize money and being given a crown in her honour as a 1500m great.

“Yeah, I was running for the money…that $60,000 is just amazing and you know, to have been awarded such money is just incredible. I think this is my first-ever event to have been awarded a lot of money like that,” Faith Kipyegon said.

“It feels so special, to have been awarded $60,000 is just incredible. For other events, we are normally getting less than that, to be here and run a women-only race is huge and motivating.

"Going forward, I hope to see these kinds of events going forward and also World Athletics to just put in a lot of money for women running and it will motivate young girls around the world. This event is something to motivate young girls, the next generation, and it’s something special, to see a women-only event and it’s motivating.”

Kipyegon noted that she has ended her season on a high, just as she had envisioned and will not go back home to spend time with her family. She added that she feels strong since she raced sparingly this season and will be out to continue where she left off at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

“I can say I’m really strong and I really do enjoy running the 1500m and I hope to be an inspiration to young girls. I started my season in a good way and it was my plan to end it in a nice way. I began my season later, I started my season in July in Paris and now I’m ending my season and I still feel strong because I didn’t compete in many races,” Kipyegon said.
