Keely Hodgkinson has revealed an undetected and risky that forced her to stop running in her early teens.
Reigning Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson did not have an easy time growing up and she has shared one major reason why.
In her teens, Hodgkinson had to pause her athletics career for a while due to a non-cancerous tumour. If it went unnoticed, the Briton talent would be deaf by now, as reported by Guardian Sport.
Hodgkinson revealed that the tumour had grown for years without being noticed and by the time it was being removed, it was a very risky affair. The tumour is one of the many things that many of her fans do not know about.

'I just don’t feel like it’s for me'- Keely Hodgkinson on resistance to join Michael Johnson's Grand Slam Track league
Keely Hodgkinson has made her feelings known about Michael Johnson's Grand Slam Track League.
“It had grown for 10 years and no one had spotted it. And it was so close to my nervous system that I could have had facial palsy if it had touched the nerve. So it was a bit risky getting it out,” Keely Hodgkinson revealed.
She is just fresh from winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, thanks to her impressive season that saw her go unbeaten in the 800m this season. She started by defending her European title then after a series of races including the Prefontaine Classic before heading to the Paris Olympic Games.
In Paris, Keely Hodgkinson was no fluke as she started her campaign with wins in the heats and then to the semifinal before she meant business in the final. She beat Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma and reigning world champion Mary Moraa to second and third places respectively.

'I'm always happy to hear this'- Junelle Bromfield opens up about the one thing she will never get over
Noah Lyles' fiancée Junelle Bromfield has reflected on something she will never fully move past.
Winning the award and having a great 2024 season has made her more confident in her goals and as she looks to make an impact next season, the world records, indoor and outdoor are in the cards.
“I'm not afraid to put my goals out there. I'm pretty close (to the world record), I would like to think. I have seen this year what my body is capable of and I'm excited to push on,” Hodgkinson said.
"That world record is something I will always have in the back of my head. But I have so many years to get stronger so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens,” she added.
