Emmanuel Wanyonyi has embraced a new training routine in readiness to conquer the 800m & 1500m this season.

Reigning Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi has changed his approach in training and gone the extra mile, training with marathoners.

Only a few athletes including Faith Kipyegon train with marathoners and can keep up with the crazy splits they achieve and Emmanuel Wanyonyi has admitted he is enjoying this new routine.

The world 800m silver medallist will be competing in his second 1500m of the season at Grand Slam Track and he admitted that one of the reasons for his shift in training is due to the event.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi revealed that his coach, Claudio Berardelli always requires that he hit certain milestones in his everyday training hence the reason for working with marathoners.

“For the 1500m, I’m working on my endurance and I will run my race, I’m just here to have fun because this is a long season. I don’t need any pressure. After the Olympics, I relaxed for three weeks then got back to the drawing board with my coach,” Emmanuel Wanyonyi told Citius Mag.

“I started the long runs with marathoners…I love running with marathoners in my camp. I started building up and up to now, the preparations are going very well. I run for about 25km or 26km because my coach told me I need to run 20km per day.”

The 20-year-old will be going up against some of the greatest 1500m runners in Michael Johnson’s league including Olympic champion Cole Hocker and world champion Josh Kerr.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi explained that he is out to have fun as he builds up for the 800m, his main focus for this season.

He added that the season is long and having to run the 1500m will build his endurance before the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan in September.

“The race is tough and that’s why I have to run my race, I don’t need to compare myself with anyone. This is my first race out of my country and I’m here to have fun,” Emmanuel Wanyonyi said.

“I feel happy to run with the 1500m runners and the race is not very competitive but I’m ready. It’s a lot of pressure for everyone because I know they are very strong but I will try my best.”

He added that he competed in the 1500m while in high school before making a switch to the 800m hence it’s not an entirely new event for him.

As Emmanuel Wanyonyi prepares for the long season, the Grand Slam Track is not only an opportunity for him to make money but also to build his endurance for what lies ahead.
