The Norwegian nearly smashed the world record after a dominant run at the season-ending race at the Prefontaine Classic.
World 1,500m silver medallist Jakob Ingebrigtsen missed the mile world record by just milliseconds as he won the Diamond League Trophy at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon on Saturday.
The Norwegian ran unchallenged for most of the race until the final metres when American Yared Neguse pushed him but he found strength to finish first in a time of 3:43.73 which was a European record.
To show just astonishing the race was, Neguse smashed the US record by clocking 3:43.97 while Britain’s George Mills completed the podium in a Personal Best time of 3:47.45.
Ingebrigtsen has now gone third on the all-time list after running the fastest mile since 1999.
His astonishing run in Eugene made up somewhat for his disappointing second place in the 1,500m at the World Championships when all thought he was a shoo-in for the gold medal.
Reynold Cheruiyot as the best placed Kenyan in fifth position after clocking 3:48.06 while compatriot Abel Kipsang could only finish 13th.
It was the first of a double mission for Ingebrigtsen at the Prefontaine Classic as he will line up again on Sunday in the 5,000m race that has Olympic champions Selemon Barega and Joshua Cheptegei, Berihu Aregawi among others.
