Incredible Ruth Chepngetich smashes women's world record to claim victory at 2024 Chicago Marathon

It was a race against time for Chepngetich, who ran majority of the race in the company of pace setter having left the chasing pack behind.

Ruth Chepngetich dominated as she claimed victory, clocking 2:09:56 to set the new women's marathon world record at the 2024 Bank of Chicago Marathon on Sunday afternoon.

The Kenyan took almost two minutes off Tigist Assefa’s world record of 2:11:53, set in Berlin last year.

She was tailed by Ethiopia's Sutume Kebede in second place with a time of 2:17:32 and Kenya's Irine Cheptai who rounded of the podium finishes with a time of 2:17:52.

Chepngetich started well taking charge of the race early on, with Asefa Kebede and Joyciline Jepkosgei right behind her.

As the race progressed Chepngetich started pulling away in the company of the pace makers as Kebede and Jekosgei led the rest of the chasing pack.

On the hour-mark Chepngetich was comfortably ahead in her won company leaving the chasing pack of Jepkosgei and co nowhere to be seen as charged on to claim victory.

"I feel so great. I am very proud of myself and I've done well for the victory and the world record. This is my dream that has come true," said Chepngetich after her victory as per Olympic.com.

The new world record holder dedicated her victory to the late Kelvin Kiptum who had set the world record in the men's marathon at the same event las year.

"This world record I'm dedicating to Kelvin Kiptum because maybe he could have defended his title and again achieved a world record. This world record has come back to Kenya. I'm so happy, I don't know how to explain," expressed Chepngetich.
