Chebet, who delivered two gold medals at the Paris Olympic games last summer has wrapped up her 2024 in style by smashing yet another record in Barcelona.

Double Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet closed out her year in spectacular fashion by clocking an astonishing 13:54 seconds to break the world 5km record at the Cursa dels Nassos, a World Athletics Label road race held in Barcelona on Tuesday.

Chebet clocked an astonishing 13:54, obliterating her own previous record of 14:13, which she had set at the same event in 2023. This time, she became the first woman in history to break the 14-minute barrier on the road—a feat that places her in a league of her own.

The 24-year-old’s remarkable performance not only rewrote the record books but also eclipsed the track 5,000m world record of 14:00.21, set by Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay in 2023.

Chebet entered 2024 as one of the most promising female distance runners, though she had long been overshadowed by icons like Faith Kipyegon and Gudaf Tsegay. Her earlier years were marked by close finishes and podium placements, including silver in the 5,000m at the 2022 World Championships and bronze in the same event at the 2023 Worlds. Despite these accolades, she often found herself playing second fiddle to more established stars.

However, 2024 saw Chebet firmly establish herself as one of the sport’s brightest superstars. She kicked off her campaign in spectacular fashion by defending her world cross-country title in March, leading Kenya to an incredible 1-2-3-4-5 sweep in Belgrade.

In May, Chebet shattered barriers once again, running 28:54.14 at the Prefontaine Classic to become the first woman in history to break 29 minutes for 10,000m on the track.

Her crowning moment came at the Paris Olympics, where she defied expectations by defeating compatriot Faith Kipyegon to clinch her first global track title in the 5,000m. Just four days later, she doubled her glory by capturing the 10,000m Olympic gold, cementing her place among the greats.

Despite her stellar Olympic run, Chebet wasn’t done yet. At the Zurich Diamond League, she clocked a world-leading 14:09.52 in the 5,000m but fell short of breaking the track world record. However, her Barcelona performance offered a fitting conclusion to her historic year.

By breaking 14 minutes in the 5km road race, Chebet has elevated the standard of women's distance running to an unprecedented level. Her record-breaking time of 13:54 shatters the limits of what many thought was possible and solidifies her position as the best female distance runner of the year.
