Zharnel Hughes has reflected on his 2024 season as he fired shots at Noah Lyles, Kishane Thompson and Co ahead of 2025.

Great Britain’s fastest man Zharnel Hughes has reflected on his season as he expressed reasons for joining Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam Track league.

Hughes has had a slow season, having an injury and by the Olympic Games, he was not fully fit to compete but tried his luck. Competing in the men’s 100m, he finished sixth in the semifinal and failed to proceed to the final.

The Briton sprint sensation did not compete in the 200m but was part of the relay team that claimed the bronze medal in the 4x100m.

Asked to describe his season in an exclusive interview with Athletics Weekly, Hughes noted that he did not really have a season following the series of challenges.

He admitted that despite posting fast times at the start of the season, he was not ready to compete against his rivals like Noah Lyles, Christian Coleman, Kishane Thompson and Fred Kerley.

The reason behind that was that he had an injury and had to run sparingly in the build-up to the Paris Olympics.

“The earlier part of the season was going pretty well but it was the latter part where my coach decided that we were going to run 100m a little too late which hampered things for me,” Hughes said.

“I usually like to race to get myself sharp and I felt as if I was held back a little bit too much so when it was time to go fast, the window I had was very, very small.

“I’m trying to make a new strategy going into this season where I am going to kick things off a little earlier and get myself race sharp.”

The world 100m bronze medallist believes that joining Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam Track league will get him ready for next season where he is targeting the 2025 World Championships.

The first edition of the event is scheduled for April 2025 in Kingston, Jamaica and Hughes will feature in all four of the Slam events.

He disclosed that getting a chance to compete in the league will be life-changing, noting that the sport needs such diversity.

“The future of our sport is bright, and with the global popularity of track, I think now is the right time to join Grand Slam Track,” Hughes said about joining Grand Slam.

“When I got back to Jamaica, I spoke to my coach and he asked if I really wanted to try it out. I said absolutely, it’s something different and totally different to what we are all accustomed to.

“I think it is something that is quite new for the sport. The fact that it’s new, it means everyone’s going to tune in and that is what you want.”
