Shashalee Forbes reflects on the honour and challenges of replacing Shericka Jackson at the Olympics despite not winning a medal.

Jamaican sprint queen Shashalee Forbes has opened up about being Shericka Jackson’s replacement after withdrawal from the women’s 100m at the Paris Olympic Games.

Forbes only intended to compete in the relay but after Shericka’s withdrawal from the women’s 100m, she received a last-minute call-up and had to fill in the gaps really quickly.

However, there was no pressure for her as she explained that it was just a learning curve, just like any other event she would go to compete in.

In an interview with Sports Max, she admitted that running the 100m on the Olympic stage for the first time boosted her confidence even though she failed to reach the final.

She finished an impressive second in her heat, clocking 11.19 seconds to cross the finish line and advance to the semifinal where she clocked 11.20 seconds to settle for sixth place.

In the relay, Jamaica finished an impressive third in the heats and missed out on a podium bracket in the final with a distant fifth-place finish.

“Being called upon suddenly, I was very elated. At the same time, I was also nervous, but I was glad and went out there and gave it my best,” Forbes admitted.

“Running in an individual event at the Olympics was always my dream, and to see that I got the chance to do so, even though it was in an unfortunate situation that brought me to replace Shericka, I am really glad I did, to showcase all that.”

Despite not filling in Shericka Jackson’s gap and bringing home a medal, Shashalee Forbes admitted that the race was very impactful and will help her in her events going forward.

This comes after she battled a series of injuries and challenges in the past seasons and her zeal to keep pushing shows that she will not stop until she gets what she wants.

“Trust me, that experience will help me a lot going forward, so I am looking forward to 2025. I have been injured, been down, and then got back up,” she said.

“To see that I could still go again, hit PBs, and keep representing my country that motivated me to know that I have a lot more to give and a lot more to do.”

In her comeback journey, she had to work on a lot of things including her previous mistakes, revealing it’s where all the changes happen.

Her discipline has also been unmatched on her way to making history and she will continue dreaming big in 2025 after making her Olympic debut.

Forbes is determined to be one of Jamaica’s greatest sprinters and 2024 was an eye-opening season for her.
