Rai Benjamin remains unbothered about the World Athletics awards nominees as he singled out who he thinks deserved recognition.

When World Athletics unveiled the list of nominees for awards, track and field fans expected the likes of Rai Benjamin and Grant Holloway to make the list but to the surprise of many, they never did.

However, the reigning Olympic 400m hurdles champion does not have any hard feelings regarding the snub from World Athletics.

The men's track and field award was won by Letsile Tebogo, the reigning Olympic 200m champion who also won the world athlete of year award.

Rai Benjamin in fact congratulated Tebogo for a job well done, noting that the recognition was well deserved. The Motswana youngster became the first African to win an Olympic medal in the 200m in the French capital.

He also anchored Botswana's 4x400m relay team to a silver medal, the first ever medal in the relay for Botswana in Olympic history.

Rai Benjamin explained that, however, he expected Grant Holloway to have made the list following his impressive run starting from the indoor campaign.

The two-time world champion revealed that he had minimal expectations about being nominated and after missing out, he remained unbothered.

Rai Benjamin further explained that apart from Grant Holloway, there are other athletes who did better than he did and deserved to be nominated.

"I don’t really care to be honest. I think if you look at the body of work that anyone has done this season, I think Grant did a phenomenal job. The guy won Worlds, the Olympics, he did it all," Rai Benjamin told Letsrun.com.

"I don’t know how the votes work to be honest with you, but I’m really not too offended. I’m not offended at all, to be honest with you. I wasn’t even expecting to be a nominee.

"The other guys are more than deserving and Tebogo had a great, great, great year, ran a phenomenal leg on the 4×4 and now did like something that’s never been done for his country."

He gave himself credit for posting fast times in 2024 and explained that it mattered that way.

The three-time Olympic champion further explained that he does not cry himself to sleep over such normal things.

"I'm damn sure was not expecting to win it at all, but I saw this random fact that I scored like 1300 points four times this year and just based off performances," Benjamin said.

"I mean technically if we were considering the old world record of 46.7[8], I’ve run under that time quite a few times (4) this year. So for me, it’s like, whatever. I don’t really cry about that type of stuff. It’s all good. If I win, I win. If I don’t, it’s all good."

Rai Benjamin has enjoyed his 2024 season and has been unbeaten in the 400m hurdles.

He started off with a win at the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix where he claimed top honours before heading to the US Olympic trials where he also won the race.

The American hurdling sensation then competed at the Diamond League Meeting in Monaco before heading to the Olympics.

At the Olympics, Rai Benjamin won the 400m hurdles and later on anchored the American 4×400m relay to a gold medal.
