Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone was vulnerable in her 'Far Beyond Gold: Running: Running From Fear to Faith' memoir, detailing how she achieved the great milestones in 2021.
Olympic 400m hurdles champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has gone down memory lane to the moment she broke the world record for the first time and beat serial rival Dalilah Muhammad.
For the longest time, Dalilah Muhammad had given Sydney a run for her money and for the first time in history, at the 2021 US Olympic trials, not only did the former defeat her compatriot but also broke her world record.
After turning professional in 2018, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone was hopeful of having a great start after always being used to winning during her collegiate days but Muhammad shocked her at the 2019 World Championships where she was forced to finish second.

Stephen Francis sheds light on the rift between Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce & Elaine Thompson-Herah at MVP: 'It became too much'
Both Fraser-Pryce & Thompson-Herah were teammates for a long time at MVP under Stephen Francis' guidance, but their rise to becoming world class sprinters naturally created animosity between the two.
She admitted that the loss was one of the most disappointing events in her career but bouncing back to kill two birds with a stone in 2021 will forever be a special moment.
In her book, Far Beyond Gold: Running: Running From Fear to Faith, Sydney detailed how refreshing it was to run with no burden in 2021 and eventually attain what she had always dreamt of.
She crossed the finish line first in a time of 51.90 seconds to become the first woman to clock under 52 seconds in the 400m hurdles. She went on to lower her time further at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, clocking 51.46 seconds to win gold.
"By the time we cleared the final hurdle, I was ahead. I pulled every ounce of energy I had for the final sprint to the finish line. As I approached it, everything went numb," Sydney wrote.
"I wasn’t thinking about the pain; I was thinking about all the trials I had endured since my last major race. How long I had waited for this moment. I glanced to my left. As I crossed the finish line, I watched the clock stop at 51.90. Oh. My. Goodness. I just broke the 52-second barrier for the first time in history."
Since then, the 2022 400m hurdles champion has enjoyed a great career despite a few injury setbacks that saw her miss the better part of the 2023 season.

Faster than physics? The scientific story of Usain Bolt’s 9.58 seconds
Mathematical explanation uncovered how Usain Bolt defied air resistance and biomechanics to achieve his extraordinary world record sprint.
However, a healthy Sydney is a lethal Sydney and in 2022, she broke her own world record twice. The American clocked 51.41 seconds at the USATF Championships before lowering that time to 50.68 seconds at the World Championships.
In 2024, Sydney also made history by breaking her world record twice. She clocked 50.65 seconds at the US Olympic trials before lowering that time at the Paris Olympic Games, winning the race in 50.37 seconds.
